My book rating system
Seeing as there will (hopefully) be many book reviews shared on this little corner of the internet, I thought I’d give a little insight into my star rating system. In all fairness, I tend to sing praise about a book no matter if I give it a one star or five star rating (I’m too nice!), but I thought it might be a good idea to share how I go about rating the books I read. Most of the time when I’m reading, I try to focus on the overall reading experience: what resonates with me, if I enjoy the writing style, the overall story, and the characters, and try to base my review off of this. So, without further ado, here is my little star rating system:
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ – I absolutely adored this book and would recommend it to everyone. What’s the appropriate amount of time to wait before reading it again?
★ ★ ★ ★ .5 – There’s just something holding this book back from meeting my five-star criteria (maybe it’s to do with my current mood or the book is missing that extra something to make it an all-time favourite), but it is still a highly enjoyable book.
★ ★ ★ ★ – A really enjoyable read. There might be a couple of elements I feel could be improved on, or perhaps it doesn’t wow me as much as I’d like, but I’d read it again.
★ ★ ★ – It has a mix of good and not so good elements, and I wouldn’t jump at the chance to read it again.
★ ★ – This book might have one or two redeemable elements, but ultimately, it’s just not for me.
★ – I didn’t enjoy a single thing about this book – I hope this will rarely be used!
